You see some weird stuff at South by Southwest. It’s probably the only place on the planet where you can go to a party and hear Steve Case and Reid Hoffman talk about small business before Bootsy Collins comes on stage and gets everyone shaking. That’s like having Mark Zuckerberg open for DMX. It doesn’t exactly make sense, but it’s sure a lot of fun.

But really, that’s what makes South By so exciting! All these different worlds —  music, art, movies, business, and tech — collide together in creative and innovative ways. And having a few drinks along the way doesn’t hurt either.

We were lucky enough to be in attendance this year and I wanted to share some things we learned and say hi to all the great people we met along the way. We went with two big goals in mind: first, to launch our new mobile app and second, to keep sharing our Cloud Consults idea with the innovative business folks that attend during the interactive part of SXSW.

The best part of the week, for me, was getting to meet actual customers. Like these folks to the right. They saw our booth, came over, and let us know how much help we’ve been to their company and how much money they’ve saved to boot. That just really makes my day and reminds me how much I love doing this stuff in the first place.

photo 4Like I said, they visited us at our booth, which is where a lot of our Cloud Consults were going on. As you might remember from my CES posts, the idea is to give people access to real lawyers to answer their questions without having to setup a meeting or pay a retainer. And we got some great questions! Some had a lot of thought behind them, like “What is the benefit of incorporating in Delaware as opposed to California?” (Answer: quite a lot, as it turns out.) Some were, well, less serious: “Are you really a lawyer or a paid actor? Both?” (Answer: a lawyer with the dashing good looks of an actor.)

All throughout the week, we were getting people to try out our mobile app too. The idea of the app is pretty simple: it let people ask questions or make documents when they’re not around their computers. (It’s ready to go if you want to try it, by the way. Just click here for IOS and here for Android.)

Anyway, we’re really proud of it. We even threw a party to celebrate! We had so many great folks come through and try the service, then stick around for Roxy Roca, an amazing local big band we were lucky enough to book for the evening. You know it’s a good party when you see people wearing the shirts you gave them the next day, so taking the picture below really made my day.

photo 5I want to send a big thanks to all the people who came to our party, tried out Cloud Consults, or even just came by to chat or pick our brains. We all learned a ton from the experience and came home energized. We really want to give more people simple and affordable access to the law. And our week at South By Southwest drove home one important thing for me: we’re well on our way.
